IELTS Academic Task 1 Verbs: Line Graphs, Maps & Process Diagrams (With Live 8-Question Drill)

Every week, a well-meaning student sends me an IELTS Task 1 report claiming that butter consumption "skyrocketed" in 1995 before "plummeting catastrophically" in 2002. On YouTube, they were told these are "Band 9 verbs." In the cold light of the marking room, they are tabloid clichés that cap your Lexical Resource score at 6.5. Here is how to write with genuine Band 8.0+ composure across graphs, processes, and maps.

Pillar 1: Trend Precision Without Tabloid Melodrama

Task 1 Academic is a statistical summary written for a university lecturer, not a sensationalist newspaper headline. Toss out skyrocket, plunge, dive, shoot up, and rollercoaster. Instead, pair clean academic verbs with precise degree adverbs, or convert the verb into a dense noun phrase.

✗ Tabloid Clichés (Avoid)

  • “Car sales skyrocketed / shot up in 2010.”
  • “Coal production plummeted / crashed to 10%.”
  • “The numbers went on a rollercoaster ride.”
  • “Exports stayed flat for ten years.”

✓ Band 8.0+ Scholarly Precision

  • “Vehicle registrations surged / rose markedly in 2010.”
  • “Coal output contracted sharply / experienced a pronounced decline.”
  • “Figures fluctuated considerably over the period.”
  • “Export volumes plateaued / remained broadly static.”

Pillar 2: Process Diagrams & Participle Sequencing

When a man-made process diagram appears on exam day, Band 6.5 candidates fall into the "recipe trap": "First, the clay is dug up. Then it is put on a roller. After that, it is heated." Every sentence is a short passive chop joined by a basic time linker.

To secure Band 8.0 for Grammatical Range and Accuracy, fuse two stages together using a Perfect Passive Participle Clause:

Blueprint: Having been + [Past Participle 1], the [Substance/Material] + is subsequently + [Past Participle 2] + where it...
Example: “Having been fermented for 48 hours, the cocoa beans are subsequently spread onto raised wooden trays to dry in the sun.”

Pillar 3: Map Transformations & Spatial Verbs

In a Task 1 Map comparison, your examiner is testing two things: whether you know directional compass language (in the north-western corner, running parallel to, adjacent to) and whether you can describe urban change without repeating "was knocked down" and "was built" six times.

Category of Change Band 6.0 Basic Verb Band 8.0+ C1 Transformation Verb
Removal & Replacement was knocked down and a hotel was built was demolished / cleared to make way for a five-storey hotel
Trees & Woodland trees were cut down the woodland was felled / cleared to accommodate...
Repurposing Buildings the old factory became a museum the disused warehouse was converted / repurposed into a gallery
Roads & Access cars were banned from the main street the main thoroughfare was pedestrianised

TASK 1 ACCURACY 0 / 8 Completed
Q1 · Line Graph Overview Eliminating Tabloid Slang

Overall, while expenditure on print newspapers declined steadily over the twenty-year period, digital subscriptions ______ after 2015.

Band 8.5 Overview Sentence:

“Overall, while expenditure on print newspapers declined steadily over the twenty-year period, digital subscriptions experienced a pronounced surge after 2015.”

Examiner Note: Combining a verb + adjective + noun (experienced a pronounced surge) shows sophisticated nominal control without tabloid exaggeration.

Q2 · Process Diagram Perfect Passive Participle Clause

______ to 1,200 degrees in the furnace, the molten glass is subsequently poured into cylindrical moulds.

Band 8.5 Process Sentence:

“Having been heated to 1,200 degrees in the furnace, the molten glass is subsequently poured into cylindrical moulds.”

Examiner Note: Careful with dangling participles! Glass cannot heat itself, so Having heated is grammatically wrong. You must use the passive participle: Having been heated.

Q3 · Map Comparison Demolition & Replacement

Between 2000 and 2020, the row of fishermen's cottages along the southern pier ______ a modern maritime museum.

Band 8.5 Map Sentence:

“Between 2000 and 2020, the row of fishermen's cottages along the southern pier was demolished to make way for a modern maritime museum.”

Examiner Note: Remember that disappear is an intransitive verb and can never be made passive (never write was disappeared). Furthermore, the noun is singular (the row... was demolished).

Q4 · Line Graph Forecasting Future Projections (2035–2050)

By 2040, the proportion of electricity generated from solar power ______ to overtake coal, reaching approximately 42%.

Band 8.5 Projection Sentence:

“By 2040, the proportion of electricity generated from solar power is projected to overtake coal, reaching approximately 42%.”

Examiner Note: When a chart includes future years, never use will for every sentence. Rotate passive forecasting verbs: is projected to, is forecast to, is anticipated to.

Q5 · Map Transformation Urban & Traffic Redesign

Under the 2025 town centre redevelopment plan, Queen Street has been ______ to create a vehicle-free plaza lined with outdoor cafés.

Band 8.5 Map Sentence:

“Under the 2025 town centre redevelopment plan, Queen Street has been pedestrianised to create a vehicle-free plaza lined with outdoor cafés.”

Examiner Note: Pedestrianised (and its noun form, the pedestrianisation of...) is one of the single highest-value C1 terms for IELTS Town Map tasks.

Q6 · Process Diagram Participle Result Clause

Pressurised steam is forced through the turbine blades, ______ the generator to produce high-voltage electricity.

Band 8.5 Process Cause-and-Effect:

“Pressurised steam is forced through the turbine blades, thereby rotating the generator to produce high-voltage electricity.”

Examiner Note: Using , thereby + -ing links mechanical action and mechanical consequence seamlessly in a single complex sentence.

Q7 · Bar & Pie Chart Proportions Replacing Repetitive "Was 25%"

Housing costs ______ just over a quarter of total household expenditure in 2024, whereas leisure represented a mere 8%.

Band 8.5 Proportion Sentence:

“Housing costs accounted for just over a quarter of total household expenditure in 2024, whereas leisure represented a mere 8%.”

Examiner Note: Watch out for the classic trap: comprise never takes of in the active voice (it is either comprised 25% or was composed of). Accounted for and represented are bulletproof.

Q8 · Map Building Conversion Interior / Architectural Repurposing

While the exterior facade of the 1930s bank was preserved, the ground-floor vault ______ an open-plan co-working hub.

Band 8.5 Architectural Sentence:

“While the exterior facade of the 1930s bank was preserved, the ground-floor vault was converted into an open-plan co-working hub.”

Examiner Note: Buildings do not convert themselves, so you need the passive voice: was converted into or was repurposed as.

Frequently Asked Questions: IELTS Academic Task 1

Should I use verbs like 'skyrocket' and 'plummet' in IELTS Academic Task 1? ▼

No. Words like skyrocket, plummet, shoot up, and rollercoaster belong in tabloid journalism, not an academic data report. Examiners penalise emotional or journalistic exaggeration under Lexical Resource. Instead, use measured academic collocations such as rose sharply, experienced a pronounced decline, contracted, or surged.

Where should I put my Overview paragraph in IELTS Task 1? ▼

Place your Overview immediately after your 1-sentence Introduction (as Paragraph 2). That way, even if you run short of time in the final two minutes of the exam, your Band 7.0+ Task Achievement overview is already safely on the page—and you will never be tempted to write a repetitive "conclusion" at the bottom.
