50 Essential Cambridge C1/C2 Key Word Transformation Patterns: Interactive Study Checklist & Live Drill

Students often treat Reading & Use of English Part 4 like a lottery. They stare at the capitalised keyword, guess a phrase that sounds vaguely right, and lose half their marks to a missing preposition or a wrong tense. In nineteen years of preparing candidates—including fifteen years lecturing at Belfast Metropolitan College—I have catalogued the exact fifty patterns that Cambridge test-writers return to year after year. Tick them off below as you master them; your progress saves automatically in your browser.

Gareth's 4-Step Elimination & Deconstruction Strategy

Before touching the 50-pattern checklist, apply this four-step red-pen routine to every single Part 4 question on exam day:

Step 1 · Strike Out the Echoes

Take your pencil and cross out every word in Sentence 1 that is already accounted for in Sentence 2. What remains is your exact semantic deficit—nothing gets left behind.

Step 2 · Inspect Tense Harmony

Underline the main verb in Sentence 1. If Sentence 1 is in the past simple, your transformation cannot casually drift into the present perfect unless a bridge structure demands it.

Step 3 · Check the Voice Shift

Look at the new subject at the start of Sentence 2. Has the object of Sentence 1 moved to the front? If so, an active-to-passive shift (or passive reporting infinitive) is mandatory.

Step 4 · Lock the 3–6 Word Frame

Slot the unchanged keyword into its fixed C1 collocation or structural blueprint. Count your words carefully (contractions like didn't count as two words).

Frequently Asked Questions: Cambridge Use of English Part 4

What are the most common Key Word Transformation patterns in C1 Advanced (CAE)? ▼

Cambridge Use of English Part 4 recycles five core grammatical families: (1) Negative and limiting inversions (Hardly... when, Not until... did), (2) Unreal past wishes and preferences (would rather you did not, high time we left), (3) Impersonal passive reporting (is believed to have been), (4) Cleft sentences and advanced concession (In spite of, Much as), and (5) Fixed prepositional and phrasal collocations (have no intention of, take no notice of).

Can you change the key word in Cambridge Use of English Part 4? ▼

Never. You must keep the capitalised keyword in its exact original form. Altering its tense, adding a plural ending, or changing its part of speech automatically scores zero marks.

How does the 2-mark split work in Key Word Transformations? ▼

Every Part 4 item is worth 2 marks, divided by a vertical bar in the examiner's mark scheme (for example, had it not | been for). Even if you forget one half of the phrase, writing the other half accurately within the 3–6 word limit secures 1 mark. Never leave a Part 4 gap blank!
